Urban Design Guidelines focus group

GBNA has actively participated in the Queen Street East Visioning study which took place during 2012. This study has resulted in new and appropriate Urban Design Guidelines (UDG) for Queen Street East, which will help protect the character of Queen Street in the Beach. A copy of the UDG is available here UDG document

Since adoption of the UDG by Toronto Council in November of 2012, GBNA has turned its attention to an educational role to help interested residents understand the Guidelines and their role relative to other planning instruments such as the Official Plan, the Avenues and Midrise Guidelines, Zoning. A community event is planned during April.

Storm Water Management focus group

Water Management Focus group update (March 2013)

Following a community meeting held on December 3, 2012, about Water Management issues in the Beach, GBNA established a Focus Group to work with Councillor McMahon’s office and City staff to establish communication lines on two fronts:

  1. To track the proposed remediations outlined in the Ward 32 Basement Flooding Environmental Assessment, and
  2. To track compliance with water management requirements at new developments.

During the summer of 2008, a series of intense storms flooded many residents homes in the Eastern Beaches area. Two specific problem areas were identified in the Beach: Kew Beach Ave along the lakefront over to and including the lower part of Lee Ave, and Kingswood south of Bracken. As a result, the area was identified as part of “Study Area 32” for investigation to develop a plan to address future flooding and reduce the amount of stormwater entering all storm and sanitary sewer systems.

A ‘Basement Flooding Class Environmental Assessment’ (EA) study for the Eastern Beaches area was completed in Fall 2012. Materials from the EA study (including the study report itself) can be found on the City’s website at: EA study and report

Recommended infrastructure upgrades include new, larger diameter sewers as shown in these maps ( Kew Beach and Kingswood areas respectively):

Capital budget has been approved by the CIty for implementation of The Basement Flooding Protection Program – Project List for 2013-2017 (see City’s website link

The list provides all projects identified by year of implementation. For our area, the listed projects below are in ‘design’ stage and slated for implementation during 2015-2017.

Ravines

GBNA Ravine Protection Policy

Toronto has only two natural resources unique to our city:  the Lake and our ravines and watercourses. These resources should rank culturally and politically as important to the definition of the City of Toronto over time.

There are no effective by-laws with teeth to protect our ravines. Ravines are not  sacrosanct as are our parks. The “Ravine and Natural Feature Protection” by law does not preserve ravines and ravines are not protected in the OP from intensification.

GBNA has delivered a ravine protection policy paper to select councilors and will continue to champion this policy issue by building relationships with other groups across the city, media coverage and political effort. Copy of the GBNA Ravine policy

Parking

Parking Focus group update

Following a community meeting in January, 2013, about Parking and Traffic congestion issues in the Beach, GBNA established a Focus Group to work with Councillor McMahon’s office and City staff to better understand the key drivers behind these issues for input by the community. Our focus includes:

  1. Reviewing applicable policies
  2. Reviewing the data used by City staff in administering these policies
  3. Evaluating how well enforcement and administration follow policy

Initial meetings have been held with City of Toronto Planning staff. Since multiple causes contribute to the overall Parking problem in the Beach  (permit parking over-subscription, tourists and visitors, local businesses, new developments, etc),  the project is lengthy and our work continues in 2014.
